The Power of Cushions and How They Can Transform Your Home

There’s no denying autumn is one of our favourite seasons. We love everything from the dappled afternoon sun pouring through our living room to neighbourhood streets lined with yellow and orange leaves.

The seasonal shift is also a great opportunity to breathe new life into our interiors – especially as we move from the warmer to cooler months. As we edge closer to winter, we know we’ll be spending a lot more time indoors and we want our interiors to be as welcoming and cosy as possible.

For us, it’s the small details that often have a lasting effect. While there is a time and place to get the drop sheet and paint roller out, our shortcut to giving our interiors an update is our seasonal ‘cushion swap’.

We simply swap our cushions in the living room and bedroom, and the energy instantly changes – it’s the same room with some overdue je ne sais quoi – and this is how we do it.

Choose your palette

In the cooler months we tend to gravitate towards earthier, tonal colours that have an inexplicable warmth to them – these are the colours that make spending a rainy day inside feel like a luxury and never a bore.

Our new Wooodlands range pays homage to autumn’s wonderful hues and afternoon golden hour with a palette of dark chocolate, hazelnut, magenta, mustard and cerise.

Tonally, these colours work incredibly well together or if there’s one colour that you connect with – we also encourage you to lean into it and layer your cushions in various shades in a single palette.

Find your perfect (palette) pair

When working with a varied palette, we tend to stick with two complementary contrasting colours. These should be two colours that don’t compete for the spotlight but rather work harmoniously together.

This autumn and winter season, we’re very partial to dark hazelnut chocolates with a zingy cerise for a hint of unexpected vibrancy. When paired together the cerise illuminates and you’ve instantly got a Mid Century colour palette that feels nostalgic but modern. We can’t resist our Mave Hazelnut cushion paired with our Bold Stripe Mustard cushion

How to layer a single palette

We love styling our cushions using a single tonal palette and how it can captivate the eye. However there is a trick when working with one colour and the trick is to create nuance and depth by layering cushions in a similar tonal family.

For the cooler months we lean into using warmer shades that feel cosy and inviting. In our Woodlands collection, we’ve been layering berry pinks with burgundy and having lots of fun mixing our floral prints in these colourways. A duo we can’t get enough is our Mave Rose cushion and Fiore Burgundy cushion.

Other single palettes that we love to layer for autumn and winter include emerald and sage greens, mustards with beige, and always a little rust and burnt orange.

Scatter cushions in odd numbers

For maximum impact, always scatter your cushions in odd number clusters. When working with off numbers, there is usually a central item that draws your eye and the end result is a natural balance to the overall styling that feels intentional and not too perfect. Whether you work in groups of three, five or seven cushions – have fun and play with our different cushion sizes and shapes – we can never resist a bolster cushion!

Slip into something new

If you do fancy a seasonal cushion swap, we’ve just made things a lot easier with the option to purchase our cushion slips without the insert.

This option is also excellent for fuss-free storage between the seasons — stowing away a neatly fold cushion cover is a lot easier than squeezing a few fluffy cushions in the linen closet!
