Everything You Need To Know About Our French Flax Linen

Discover why Bonnie and Neil's French flax linen bedding is a beautiful, considered choice for your bedroom. Breathable, timeless and grown with care - here's the full story.

Why Linen?

There's a reason linen has been woven into domestic life for thousands of years and it isn't nostalgia. It's simply one of the finest natural fibres on earth: strong, breathable, biodegradable, and more beautiful the longer you live with it.

Our French flax linen brings all of that quiet heritage into your bedroom, with the considered, colour-forward sensibility that's always been at the heart of Bonnie and Neil.

Where our linen comes from

Not all linen is created equal - and where it's grown makes all the difference.

Our linen is woven from flax cultivated in the fertile fields of Western Europe, the historic heartland of premium linen production. This region's cool, temperate climate and mineral-rich soil create the ideal conditions for growing long, strong flax fibres - the kind that form the basis of truly beautiful bedding.

We carry the European Flax™ Standard, the internationally recognised guarantee of full traceability for linen fibre grown in Western Europe.

What Makes Our Linen Different

OEKO-TEX® Certified
Our linen holds OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification - one of the world's most trusted textile safety standards. Every component, including threads, dyes and fastenings, has been independently tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. Better for you, better for the people who make it, and gentler on the planet.

European Flax™ Verified
The European Flax™ label is your assurance that our linen fibre has been grown, retted and prepared in Western Europe, in accordance with strict environmental and social standards. Flax cultivation requires no irrigation, no GMOs, and very little pesticide - making it one of the most considered crops in the world.

Stonewashed and pre-washed
Every piece is stonewashed and pre-washed before it reaches you - giving our linen that relaxed, lived-in softness from the very first night. No stiffness, no awkward breaking-in period. Just beautifully soft bedding, immediately.

A natural thermoregulator

Linen's hollow fibre structure allows air to circulate freely, drawing warmth and moisture away from the body. The result is a naturally balanced sleeping environment - cooler in summer, gently warmer in winter - without changing your bedding.

Gets better with age

Unlike cotton, which can thin and pill over time, linen grows softer, more supple and more expressive with every wash. The fibres relax and develop a quiet lustre that only deepens over the years. Your bedding becomes more itself, not less.

Naturally moisture-wicking

Linen can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, then releases it quickly. A drier, fresher sleeping environment - especially welcome in warmer months or humid climates.

Hypoallergenic and gentle on skin

The natural properties of flax make linen inherently resistant to bacteria, dust mites and common allergens. A thoughtful choice for sensitive skin.

Durability

Linen is approximately 30% stronger than cotton. With considered care, quality linen bedding can last for many years - an investment in something that only grows more beautiful with time.

Grown with the earth in mind

Flax is cultivated with minimal water, little chemical input, and no wasted parts of the plant. At the end of its long life, linen returns to the earth. Choosing linen is choosing less, and better.

How to Care for Your Linen

Good linen is low-maintenance by nature - a little care goes a long way.

WASHING
Machine wash on a cold or warm gentle cycle (up to 40°C) with a mild detergent. Avoid anything with bleaching agents, which can break down the fibres over time. Wash separately from heavier items to reduce friction.

DRYING
Line drying is the gentlest option and the one we'd always suggest - natural air and light help soften the fibres and keep colours true. If using a dryer, choose a low heat setting and remove while still slightly damp to reduce wrinkles.

IRONING
Linen's softly relaxed, lived-in quality is part of what makes it so lovely - you don't need to iron it if you'd rather not. If you prefer a crisper finish, a warm iron on slightly damp fabric works beautifully.

SOFTENING WITH TIME
Each wash makes your linen a little softer. For the first few washes, you'll notice the fibres becoming progressively more pliable.

STORAGE
Store clean and dry in a cool, well-ventilated space. A linen bag or cotton pillowcase is ideal - avoid plastic, which can trap moisture.

How Long Will It Last?

With proper care, quality French flax linen bedding can last for many years. When you bring linen into your home, you're choosing something that will still be beautiful and functional long after lesser alternatives have faded, thinned or been replaced. Rotate your sets regularly for even wear, and know that every wash is making it better - not wearing it away.

A Note On Colour

Our linen is printed and with regular use may fade slightly over time. You may notice very slight variations in texture or tone - this is a natural characteristic of linen, and part of what makes each piece genuinely its own.

Linen FAQ - Your Questions, Answered

French flax linen refers to linen woven from flax plants grown in Western Europe - historically across France, Belgium and the Netherlands - where the climate and soil produce the world's finest flax fibre. Our linen carries the European Flax™ Standard certification, which guarantees the origin and quality of the fibre from farm to finished fabric.

It's one of the best choices. Linen's naturally hollow fibre structure allows exceptional airflow, drawing warmth and moisture away from the body throughout the night. It's also moisture-wicking, absorbing up to 20% of its own weight before feeling damp, then releasing it quickly. Many people who make the switch notice a real difference within the first few nights.

Our linen is stonewashed and pre-washed before it reaches you, so the fibres have already begun to soften and relax. There's no breaking-in period - it feels soft and lovely from the very first night. And unlike cotton, linen only grows softer, more supple and more beautiful with every wash.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is one of the world's most rigorous and widely recognised textile safety certifications. It means every component of our bedding - fabric, dyes, threads and trims - has been independently tested and verified as free from harmful chemicals. It's our commitment to your wellbeing, and to the people who make our pieces.

European Flax™ is an independent certification that guarantees the traceability of linen fibre grown in Western Europe. It verifies that our flax has been cultivated, retted and processed in accordance with strict environmental and social standards - including no GMOs, no irrigation, and responsible land care. When you see the European Flax™ mark, you know exactly where your linen began.

Machine wash on a cold or warm gentle cycle (up to 40°C) with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. Wash separately from heavier items. Tumble dry on a low heat setting - removing while still slightly damp - or line dry for best results. Do not dry clean.

Yes - and we'd encourage you to embrace it. Linen's softly relaxed, lived-in quality is part of its character and one of the things that makes it so beautiful to live with. If you prefer a crisper look, a warm iron on slightly damp fabric works well.

Quality French flax linen, cared for thoughtfully, can last for many years. Linen fibres are approximately 30% stronger than cotton, and they become more beautiful - not less - with age and washing. It's one of the most enduring natural textiles available.

Linen is naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial and resistant to dust mites. Its breathable, moisture-wicking properties also help create a cleaner, fresher sleeping environment. It's a gentle, considered choice for those with sensitive skin - though as always, we'd suggest consulting your doctor for specific medical concerns.

Our linen is piece-dyed for deep, even colour. With considered care - cool washing, low-heat drying, storage away from direct sunlight - the colour holds beautifully over many years. A very gradual softening of tone over time is natural, and lends linen its characteristic, graceful quality.

Flax is one of the world's most sustainable crops. It requires no irrigation, very little pesticide, and every part of the plant is used. Our European Flax™ certification verifies responsible growing practices, and our OEKO-TEX® certification ensures our processing is free from harmful chemicals.
