Can you ever have too many cushions? For us, there’s only one correct answer: no.
Cushions are your shortcut to styling your home with personality and creativity. They instantly boost and refresh tired interiors (without a paint brush or drop sheet in sight).
Cushions evoke a sense of play and experimentation. Scatter them, mix them, swap them, and discover a room that feels new with just a plump and fluff.
Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist, here’s our Bonnie and Neil guide on how to elevate your interiors with cushions – from choosing cushions that complement your home’s aesthetic to styling them in almost every room in your home.
For the minimalist
Do you like your interiors calming and clutter free? Cushions are an excellent way to inject style and comfort in equal measures without compromising your minimalist aesthetic.
For a pared-back sophisticated look, we recommend selecting cushions in a neutral or rusty palette and embracing mixed textures. We never tire of pairing our Grain Cream cushion with our boucle range, and then adding some contrast with our striped Linear Tan Peach cushion.
Less is more for the minimalist, and you’d be surprised at how even one hero cushion can instantly transform the look and feel of a space. Give your bedroom an easy update by placing our Cloud Pink cushion on the bed with our Flora Buff Bed Cover.
For the maximalist
In the world of maximalism it may seem no rules apply but pulling this look off requires balance and restraint.
The trick to creating harmony in this world is to choose cushions that have something in common despite being vastly different – this could be thematic, textural or tonal.
For us the secret is sticking to a tonal palette but letting your creativity run wild with prints and patterns, as well as embracing different sized and shaped cushions.
A trio that is working overtime in our living room currently is our Rosetta Saffron cushion, Big Stripe orange cushion with its scalloped fringe and Carmine Rust bolster cushion. Scatter cushions liberally – the less of the couch you see – the higher the visual payoff.
For those who like to bring the outdoors in
If you’re finding the Phalaenopsis orchid on your coffee table is a little too high maintenance, then consider bringing the outdoors in with our collection of botanical-themed cushions.
Biophilic design offers a connection to the natural environment and the joy it can bring to our interior. If this sounds like you, reach for our Margot Khaki, Herb Reverse and Marigold cushions, then add to your collection with either a graphic stripe or demure linen cushion.
For a botanical oasis inside your living room minus the watering schedule, scatter various sized cushions, starting with the larger ones at the back and smaller towards the front with either around or bolster cushion to anchor the look. For a more subtle approach, style our block colour cushions with a singular botanical print – our Little Leaf print in tan is a style chameleon and will blend in with most existing decor.
For the colour devotee
In homes that embrace bold colours, picking the right cushions can feel overwhelming without a thoughtful approach.
When styling cushions for the colour curious we tend to play with contrasting colours, which allows us to introduce a few colours that we know will be complementary without being too contrived. We also lean toward bold colours, opposed to muted tones and pastels, and graphic prints and patterns.
Right now, it’s all about deep burgundy tones and pops of fuschia for us.
